Butterfly Release

Last month I posted pictures of the caterpillars and chrysalis’s.  They soon emerged as beautiful Painted Lady butterflies.  We released them one day, and in the process were able to get pictures with them as we let them go.  We had such fun holding them and were a little sad to have to say good bye.

Tabloid Day

Here are some pictures of what we got to do on Tabloid day. Students played games or did activities such as painting and eating a freezie (such hardships 🙂 ) for points, and then they could buy candy from the candy bar with their points.

Forte Whyte Alive

Today’s field trip was a lot of fun.  We spent a lot of time outside in nature, and were happy for a nice hot day.  Here are a few of the pictures I took.  We had divided into smaller groups with kids from all the grade 1 classes, so I was not able to take pictures of all those in our class.

We walked over the board walk and went critter dipping.

Went to the observation deck,

saw an owl that was alive, and then several other animals that were fortunately not alive anymore.

We watched some bees working in their hive, and even saw where they stored their honey, as the sides of their hive was a clear plexiglass.  We then had lunch inside.

After lunch we went on a scavenger hunt and found many cool things in nature.

Before we left we went inside a real teepee and walked inside the sod house,

but it was too dark for pictures.

We then said good bye and went home.

Lego city

In our city we had a restaurant made by Frances and Chloe, a hockey rink made by Julien and Gavyn, a police station by Ava and Mikylo, a zoo by Wren and Eric, a movie theatre by Cole and Mackenzie, a dentist office by Genevieve and Brooke H., Walmart by Isaac and Brooke B., a hospital by Peyton and Torin, an ice cream store by Claire and Temesgen, and a school by Danika and Conner.  We added stop signs, roads, traffic lights, park signs, and a train along with other city signs.

Eric, Danika, and Mikylo were putting cotton balls in a machine and it gets sucked up in the pipes and it shoots the cotton balls out somewhere else and we try to catch it.  Torin is playing with the water and watching a ball in the water tornado.

We though the field trip was a lot of fun!!!!

Social Studies

First, we made maps of our own yards and labeled them in French.  Some of the words we learned were: la maison, une piscine, une trampoline, les fleurs, l’arbre ….

We used the map of our houses to make a 3D map of our yards with paper bag houses.

We also put in trees and bushes according to what the map of our yard said.  Many put in flower beds and pools.  Great job everyone!

Catterpillar fun!

We got caterpillars.  At first they were small, and then they grew bigger and fatter.  

They turned into J’s and finally into a chrysalis.  What’s going to happen next?

We put them in a cage so that when they turn to butterflies, we can watch them fly around.  We have painted ladies.

Winter stayed around a bit too long for our liking so we tried to blow it away by saying good bye and welcoming spring.

Earth Day Celebration

Field Trip to St Boniface University

We went on a field trip to go see a play. It was about Paul et Suzanne, and they did three stories: 1.  Little red riding hood   2. Goldilocks and the 3  bears  3. The 3 little pigs.

Social Studies

So far we have learned about “le monde” and “le Canada”.  Next month you will see pictures about our Winnipeg project.

We learned about other countries and we liked learning about it.  The world is made up of “l’eau et la terre”.  “Le monde tourne.”  ” Il y a des océans et des continents.”

In Canada we have some different birds, people that play different sports, flowers, different money, different trees like the maple tree, farms, mountains, igloos, northern lights and the list goes on and on and on.  – Genevieve, Eric, Peyton, Torin, Brooke H

St Patrick’s Day

We had some special visitors in the class to teach us about St Patrick’s Day.

My Ama and Grandad wanted to show us some things that they hang up in their house for St Patrick’s day.

Ama is reading us a story about Fin Mcoole. A giant tried to beat up Fin Mcoole but he had a disguise as a baby and tricked the giant.  The giant ate the bread but bite on the frying pan that was cooked inside.  The giant lost all his teeth and decided to leave, so Fin did not get beat up.

Special Visitors – Energy 106

We had two special visitors come today.  Jordan Knight and JD Francis from Energy 106.  They came and read Don’t Be Silly Mrs. Millie by Judy Cox.  We all had a wonderful time and even got to participate in the story telling.

A day in Africa

Today we learned a bit about Africa. I grew up in Africa and loved it, and I wanted to share it with the class.  My brother and his wife came and showed us many different articles from Africa.  There were face and animal wood carvings, bronze bracelets and statues, African hats, purses made out of leather, leather flip flops, and some traditional swords which were handled with care. 🙂

This fits in with science.  We are learning that there are many different materials and that different objects can be made from different materials.  I hope you enjoy the pictures, and make sure to ask your child about what is happening in the pictures.  Below you will also find pictures of an African snack.  Have a great time discussing the day.

SNACK TIME

We tried African doughnuts.  They are a deep fried sweet dough rolled in sugar.  The kids loved them!  We also had bissap juice.  A juice made from boiling roselle flowers, which are a type of hibiscus.  The vote was about 5 yes it is good to 15 no it is not good..

We have been exploring what different objects are made of and that many objects are made of many different materials.

Festival du Voyageur

We had a visit from Tibert le Voyageur who lead us in acting out a story about when the voyageurs first came to Canada and what it was like.  We had a wonderful pancake breakfast …

… dressed like voyageurs, and with the help of a grade 2 class we learned about how they used canoes to get around on water…

Back in our class, we learned how maple syrup is made, made our own maple trees, and even got to try maple syrup on snow.  Yum, yum!!

We had a great time during the Festival du Voyageur and we learned a lot.

We have put in a lot of hard work this month and it sure is paying off.  We are sooooooooo much smarter now.

First we did like a shape, then we did a light line close to the middle, then a little bump kinda in the middle of the fish, then some little things next to his mouth, and then the tail that goes like this, and the eye is like this, and we colored it a little.  Then you do a bump at the bottom and a little line above the eye right here, and the fins like this and this and around.    (While talking and describing, she is drawing with her finger in the air.  We followed an artist on youtube who showed us step by step how to draw a goldfish :).                — Wren

Compost club

 We do compost club on Monday and Friday. We grab the old food from the compost bin and we feed them to the fish. It smells gross!  We wear gloves because we don’t want to get dirty.      – Danika

IMG_4776December has been full of some more fun learning. We are learning our core subjects using the different winter celebrations.  Our focus before Christmas has been Christmas as each student celebrates it, as well as Hanukkah, and Las Posadas.
We have been creating unique gingerbread men by playing an addition game.

IMG_4783We have written to Santa and are waiting, and waiting, and waiting, and waiting for his response.  We asked him some really hard questions like:

Why does Rudolf’s nose glow?

Why does he only wear red and white?

Then we addressed and decorated our envelops before mailing them.

For Hanukkah we learned about menorahs and dreidels.  We absolutely love to sing and play the driedel song.  We made our own dreidels using old CDs with cork centers.  The fun of the game is to collect as much gelt or money as possible.

The next celebration is Las Posadas.  Pictures to come at the end of the week as we are just starting with Las Posadas.

Toothless Wonders

IMG_4766 During Student Led conferences I realized that we have a few classroom celebrations that I have not let you know about.  One is that we celebrate as a class when a classmate looses a tooth.  We have a Lost Tooth chart where we graph how many teeth each student has lost.  It is quite fun!  IMG_4767

Each time they lose a tooth they get to put a sticker of a tooth on the chart beside their name and they get to pick a book about a tooth fairy or teeth, which I read to them during story time.  I have read at least 13 books about teeth or the tooth fairy since the beginning of the year.  Soon we are going to have to reread books. 🙂 

IMG_4768Today I found a new tooth book at the Good Will store, and another teacher kindly lent me some of her books about teeth or the tooth fairy, which we have started reading already.

Even if a tooth is pulled by the dentist or comes out because of an accident, it still counts. Those teeth are disappearing quickly! Here are a few of our toothless wonders.  Aren’t they cute!
